Elevate the classic Old Fashioned with a smoky, tequila-infused twist. This bold cocktail swaps whiskey for reposado or añejo tequila, blending its rich, earthy flavors with a touch of agave sweetness and bitters. A kiss of wood smoke adds depth and intrigue, making each sip a unique sensory experience. Perfect for those who appreciate a modern spin on a timeless favorite.
For a Tequila Old Fashioned, the choice of wood chips can enhance the tequila's natural flavors and complement the cocktail's ingredients. Here are some great options:
Texas Mesquite – Adds a bold, smoky flavor that pairs well with the earthy and robust characteristics of tequila, especially añejo.
Cherry – Offers a mild sweetness and a hint of fruitiness, balancing the agave syrup and bitters.
American Oak – Provides a classic, strong smoke flavor that highlights the barrel-aged notes in reposado or añejo tequila.
Hickory – A richer, smokier option that works well if you want to emphasize a more intense profile.
Apple – Delivers a subtle, slightly sweet smoke that complements tequila without overpowering its natural flavors.
Experimenting with different woods can create unique versions of the cocktail, making it a signature drink for your palate or event.
Tip: When you smoke the glass first, the smoke will cling to the sides, and with every sip, your nose will catch that smoky aroma. While the drink itself remains unchanged, your senses will be tricked into thinking the entire profile has shifted, adding a unique layer of depth to each sip. Some prefer to smoke the completed drink again for visual effect, which is perfectly fine, but keep in mind that the smoke will only linger on the surface of the liquid.
